Kalanchoe beharensis
The Ultimate Collector's Statement
The Felt Bush (Kalanchoe beharensis) is one of the most desirable collector's succulents, and for good reason! These plants are famous for their unique, velvety texture and, more importantly, their giant, sculptural growth habit—they turn into magnificent, tree-like shrubs over time.
Information
Character and Care
These are the standard, large-growing species of K. beharensis. The distinct, silvery-green leaves are covered in a dense, soft, felt-like hair, which is a key adaptation for its native Madagascan climate.
-
Size Warning: These are small, postable-sized plants for now, but be warned! I have added photos of my mature plant to show you just how massive it grows—single leaves can reach 45cm in length! If you get one, definitely think about where you will put it, as it will need space.
-
Unique Feature: The woolly, velvety texture is utterly gorgeous and makes the plant irresistible to touch.
-
Versatility: As a drought-tolerant plant, it's very easy to culture and thrives in full sun to partial shade, making it a rewarding and trouble-free addition to your collection.
Why do I love them so much? Because they are so easy, as well as being so rewarding! Most succulents grow happily without being 'fluffed' over and really don't care if you forget about them for a while.
They achieve this amazing resilience by storing water in their thick leaves and stems. They are a brilliant choice for sunny positions and for anyone just starting their plant journey, as they require far less frequent watering than their jungle cousins.
These beauties truly are the ultimate low-maintenance companion!
