Orbeanthus hardyi
For the Unusual Plant Lover
This plant is an absolute must-have for anyone who appreciates the truly weird and wonderful side of the succulent world! Often sold as Orbea hardyi, this low-creeping perennial succulent is a fascinating "stick plant" that adds incredible texture and interest to any collection.
I personally love growing the more unusual and weird plants, and this one certainly delivers!

Character and Flowers
-
Distinctive Stems: The plant grows plump, pen-sized stalks that are covered in lumps and bumps (tubercles) over the surface. These grey-green stems often feature subtle darker markings or mottling (the "dapples") all over it, giving it a unique, patterned look.
-
Trailing Habit: It's versatile in how it grows. Mine trails down beautifully in a hanger, acting as a long, dangling plant, sending out new growth tips. It can also trail across the ground, so how you display it really comes down to your personal preference!
-
Awesome Flowers: The flowers are truly spectacular. They emerge along the stems and are so unique and patterned—you really need to see them yourself to appreciate just how amazing they are!
-
Why do I love them so much? Because they are so easy, as well as being so rewarding! Most succulents grow happily without being 'fluffed' over and really don't care if you forget about them for a while.
They achieve this amazing resilience by storing water in their thick leaves and stems. They are a brilliant choice for sunny positions and for anyone just starting their plant journey, as they require far less frequent watering than their jungle cousins.
These beauties truly are the ultimate low-maintenance companion!
