Davallia mariesii - Rabbits foot fern
Information
There is a heap of confusion online between the Rabbit's Foot and the Hare's Foot fern. I’ve found this variety to be incredibly hardy—it handles the cold in my tunnel house (which gets close to 0°C!) much better than its more 'tropical' cousins.
Whether it’s technically a Rabbit or a Hare, it has those beautiful, pencil-thick fuzzy 'paws' and delicate lacy fronds that everyone loves. Just a heads up: if you forget to water it or it gets a real winter chill, it might drop some leaves—don't panic! It’s just its way of taking a nap before it bounces back.
It’s even considered a 'lucky' plant in some cultures—perfect for adding a bit of good juju to a hanging basket or a terrarium.
This variety, Davallia mariesii, is the true Japanese Rabbit's Foot fern (known as Shinobu in Japan). It has a long history of being grown for its resilience and 'lucky' fuzzy paws.
I love how these pencil-thick rhizomes wrap themselves around the pot—it’s a very patient, hardy grower that adds a bit of ancient charm to any room.
