Rhipsalis elliptica (Elliptic Leaf Jungle Cactus)
A lush, architectural jungle cactus for the serious collector. It’s a hardy hanging or trailing grower that offers a much tidier, more structured look than the hairier, spindly varieties that can look a bit wild.
This is a well-established, rooted plant (approx. 8cm+), offering a much cleaner and more substantial look than messier varieties. Perfect for a hanging basket or a high shelf where its rhythmic, trailing stems can truly shine.
Information
The Look: This variety is loved for its distinct, oval-shaped segments. While it's often confused with pachyptera, elliptica tends to have slightly more elongated, smoother segments and a more pendulous habit. It’s a solid choice if you want the "jungle" look without the plant looking thin or sparse.
Sun Blushing: If you give it plenty of bright light, the edges of the green segments will "blush" with a bronze or reddish tint. It’ll produce tiny, pale flowers along the scalloped margins, eventually followed by small berries.
-
Style Tip: Because it’s a natural trailer, get it up high. A simple, modern pot works best to show off the geometric shape of the stems.
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is best. It can handle some morning sun, which helps pull out those copper colours.
-
Soil: Keep it in an airy, free-draining mix—think orchid bark or a gritty cactus blend—so the roots can breathe.
Forget the word 'Cactus' when you think of these beauties! While they are technically part of the wider Cactus family, they couldn't be further from the desert types you might imagine. These unique plants don't grow in arid deserts and certainly don't have the sharp spikes of their distant cousins.
Instead, Rhipsalis are native to the steamy, humid Rain Forest environments of Central and South America. They thrive in dappled light, high humidity, and conditions that feel decidedly tropical. Their trailing, segmented stems create an amazing cascade of green, making them perfect for hanging baskets or shelf displays. They're an absolute joy to care for and a fantastic choice for any plant lover looking for something a bit different and very low maintenance!
There are so many different types of Rhipsalis—I myself would have over 10 varieties of these! If you want to know which other Rhipsalis I have, please enquire.
