Any outstanding orders placed over the holiday period will resume processing from 5th January.

With such short weeks, I don't feel secure about posting and possibly having plants sitting in limbo for over a week.

I hope you are ok with this decision.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Rhipsalis pilocarpa: The Hairy-Stemmed Rhipsalis

Rhipsalis pilocarpa is one of the more common types of Rhipsalis you'll encounter, and it's a real favourite for its unique, velvety appearance. You'll instantly notice that the stems have soft, small, noticeable hairs scattered over them. Don't worry, these aren't the sharp spikes of desert cacti; instead, they give the plant a lovely, soft, fuzzy texture that is unique among the Jungle Cacti.

Growth, Flowers, and Stunning Fruit

This variety has a wonderfully dynamic growth habit that adds volume and drama to its display:

  • Growth Habit: It often sends out strong, new growth that shoots straight upwards initially.   However, these stems don't stay vertical for long; over time, they will arch over and then fall to bulk up the mass growing downwards, creating a dense, trailing look.

  • Blooms and Berries: When it flowers, you'll be rewarded with numerous small, creamy flowers.   These look very pretty if you're lucky enough to get a good number at once!   But the real show continues after the flowers fade: the stems hold onto small green fruits that mature and then turn a beautiful reddish colour, providing a lovely dash of colour that lasts for ages.

Forget the word 'Cactus' when you think of these beauties!   While they are technically part of the wider Cactus family, they couldn't be further from the desert types you might imagine.   These unique plants don't grow in arid deserts and certainly don't have the sharp spikes of their distant cousins.

Instead, Rhipsalis are native to the steamy, humid Rain Forest environments of Central and South America.   They thrive in dappled light, high humidity, and conditions that feel decidedly tropical.   Their trailing, segmented stems create an amazing cascade of green, making them perfect for hanging baskets or shelf displays.   They're an absolute joy to care for and a fantastic choice for any plant lover looking for something a bit different and very low maintenance!

There are so many different types of Rhipsalis—I myself would have over 10 varieties of these!   If you want to know which other Rhipsalis I have, please enquire.
