Dragon Fruit
Information
The Exotic Pitahaya
Dragon Fruit has become incredibly popular for its unique look, delicious fruit, and the impressive, climbing nature of the plant itself. Selenicereus undatus is a species of Cactaceae and is the most commonly grown variety, valued as both an ornamental vine and a source of the pitahaya fruit.
About These Plants:
These are seedlings that I grew from seed (yes, lots germinated!).
They are currently small and are best grown as an ornamental houseplant, often wound around a support. Most people enjoy them just for their unique look!
Please Note: These seedlings have not flowered or fruited yet, as they are still young. Photos are indicative only.
Tips for Flowering/Fruiting:
From what I have studied, to encourage these plants to fruit and flower, they need to be grown vertically and secured to a strong support so they grow upright. Once the plant reaches the top of the support, allow the growth to cascade down—that change in growth direction is what often triggers the blooms!
Dragon Fruit, Curly Sue, Fishbone Cactus—whatever unique names they go by, these Epiphytic Cacti are the true show-stoppers of the cactus world! Unlike their arid, desert cousins, these incredible plants hail from the lush, humid rainforests of Central and South America, where they grow happily on tree trunks and rocks. If you’re looking to build a magnificent indoor jungle, this is where you start!
In this collection, you'll find stunning flat-stemmed bloomers like Epiphyllum, Disocactus, and the impressive climbing and trailing Selenicereus (which includes the Dragon Fruit plant). They are often trailing and always magnificent, offering a completely different, wavy texture and look from your standard spiky cacti.
