Begonia Beefsteak
Information
The 'Beefsteak' Begonia is a widely loved and incredibly easy-going variety, making it a perfect starting point for your Begonia collection. It features large, round-shaped leaves with a striking glossy sheen and a beautiful bronze-green tinge on top, contrasted by a dramatic, rich red colour underneath. It also produces charming small, pinkish flowers.
This plant stays reasonably compact and is very simple to manage. If the stem starts to extend a little too far, a quick, easy snip will reduce its size and encourage it to sprout new growth lower down, keeping it looking bushy.
Because this variety is pretty tough, you can even enjoy it outside in a sheltered spot or a shade house—I keep mine happy on my sheltered deck!
Kia ora! Welcome to the dazzling, diverse world of Begonias. You've hit the jackpot here—this family is massive, covering everything from the striking, spotted leaves of the Cane varieties to the vibrant, velvety swirls of the Rex types.
They come in such a big range—leaf colours, textures, climbers, or clumping types—it's impossible not to find something you love!
A quick heads-up on care: Most Begonias thrive in bright, indirect light and prefer their soil to be kept evenly moist, but definitely not soggy (they hate wet feet!). If you avoid splashing the leaves and give them a bit of warmth, you're set for a real show.
