Pussycats, Plant Care, and a bit of Zygoscactus Zest!

It seems that since we've rolled into November, the weather has truly decided it's summertime.   I do like it fine, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't mean we're in for one of those horridly hot and super humid summers, though.

The Catnip Supervisor: A True Connoisseur

You know those photos you see on Instagram that just make you smile? Well, that was the exact reaction to a snap I recently shared of my gorgeous Ragdoll.

He's currently settling into his favourite, most demanding supervisory spot—right in the middle of a big, beautiful patch of fresh catnip, naturally.   He absolutely insists on only attacking and munching on the herbaceous perennial, turning his nose up at the dried stuff. (Honestly, he's a true connoisseur!)

Come see his hilarious supervisory pose and the full photo over on the latest Instagram post!   Here

Deep Dive: The Wonderful World of Zygoscactus

I've written extensively about these little beauties, both on my website and in several dedicated Zygocactus Facebook groups.

Right now, the Hatiora – also known as Rhipsalidopsis or the Easter Cactus (as those Americans often refer to them!) – are just starting to put on a spectacular flowering show.

I still see lots of people posting photos of their Hatiora, thinking it's a Christmas Cactus, simply because it’s flowering now in November.   Those American common names really confuse us Kiwis, don't they?   It's a classic mix-up!

If you've been collecting these delightful additions for a while, you'll know they are not desert cacti.   They are epiphytic, rainforest cacti instead.   This means they are far happier with:

    • Indirect or dappled light (no harsh midday sun, thanks!)
    • Cooler temperatures to really encourage that stunning bloom.
    • Generous watering at the correct times of the year.

Never let them get super dry, like you would their prickly desert cousins. Less heat and indirect light suits them just fine.

Want to learn more about these Zygoscactus plants?   I've detailed exactly how to get the most blooms in my popular blog posts.
