Why did my Christmas Cactus not flower?

.

You may have wondered why your Zygocactus, Schlumbergera or commonly known as Christmas Cactus, is not flowering.

Several factors can affect its blooming. Firstly, temperature plays a crucial role. Christmas Cacti require a cool winter period to initiate blooming. However, it is worth noting that some individuals have reported successful flowering even in high temperatures, such as those experienced in tunnel houses.

Another factor to consider is lighting. Having the cactus indoors with additional lighting during winter may inhibit blooming.

It is recommended to provide the plant with a rest period by limiting watering when it is not actively growing.

Additionally, fertilizing lightly and irregularly is advised, with specific feeding during spring and autumn.

If your Christmas cactus is blooming but not growing, it could be due to extreme temperatures or overly moist soil, which can lead to root rot. Some varieties are more sensitive than others, with red-flowering ones being particularly tricky. Ensuring the soil is well-draining, allowing it to dry between waterings, and using pots with drainage holes are important considerations.

In terms of room temperature, secondary sprouting requires cooler conditions (10-12°C) compared to primary sprouting (15-21°C).

If your Christmas cactus is not blooming despite your efforts, there are a few possible reasons. Firstly, the weather may be too warm, and the plant needs a temperature drop to trigger blooming. Placing the plant near a north-facing window or a door that experiences cool air can help.

Additionally, the plant may require a period of near-dryness before it can signal blooming in winter.

Lastly, it is important to ensure that you have a true Christmas Cactus and not a different type of cactus, such as Thanksgiving Cactus or Easter Cactus, as they have different blooming requirements.

ps.   I do not do cuttings of any of these when they are actively flowering, but some of them I do have small plants.
